Work-Study

Student employees are an integral part of the daily operation of Smith College. The Student Employment Office offers employment opportunities that support educational and personal goals and help students achieve both professional and personal development.

The work-study component of a financial aid award represents the opportunity to have a job on campus or through one of our off-campus employment partners. Students are responsible for finding a position that aligns with their preferences and schedules, and are encouraged to apply early for the best selection of jobs.

Students may work to earn money for books and supplies, to pay tuition accounts, or for personal spending money. There is no obligation to work all or any of the hours awarded, though income not earned is not replaced with other aid.

Refer to your financial aid award to verify the type and amount of work-study you are eligible for, which in turn determines where you can work and how much you can earn. Your other aid will not be increased if you choose not to work. Your earnings are paid directly to you.

Work-Hour & Position Limitations

Students on work-study may work up to eight hours per week (second-year students and beyond up to 10 hours per week) and may apply for available jobs within the Workday “Jobs Hub.” All mandatory Payroll requirements must be completed before students can be hired. Students without work-study awards may begin to apply for jobs on October 1.

International Students

International students attending Smith on an F-1 visa and are awarded work-study are permitted to have on-campus work-study jobs as a benefit of their visa status. Students on work-study may work up to eight hours per week (second year students and beyond up to 10 hours per week) and may apply for available jobs within the Workday “Jobs Hub.” International students on an F-1 visa cannot work more than 20 hours per week during term-time due to legal restrictions. International students are not eligible to work off campus at any time.
