About the Center
The Jacobson Center supports students in becoming skillful writers, speakers, and learners in all areas of their lives: academic, public, creative, and professional. We support faculty in teaching with writing in all disciplines and at all course levels.
Our work is grounded in the following principles and practices:
- We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome.
- We approach writing as an ongoing, imperfect process, and affirm that writers at all skill levels can grow through revision and reflection.
- We value all varieties of English and encourage students to develop their own voice.
- We view students as active partners with authority over their work and support them in developing, refining, and articulating ideas with clarity and confidence.
- We believe that all students inherently possess the skills needed to be effective public speakers.
- We recognize that all students can succeed academically through consistent practice, reflection, and supportive relationships.
- We believe that writing is an essential component of teaching in all academic disciplines and collaborate with faculty on effective, innovative integration of writing into course design.

The Jacobson Center for Writing, Teaching and Learning takes its name from Joan Leiman Jacobson ’47, whose generous gift makes its programs possible.
Appointments
The Jacobson Center is now accepting appointments for in-person tutoring. We are cognizant that some members of the Smith community are immunocompromised, however, and face greater risks from infection. As a result, we will continue to offer Zoom appointments as an option.

The Jacobson Center Logo
The logo was designed by Elliot Offner, Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus in the Humanities in the Smith College Department of Art, where he taught from 1960 until 2004. He died in 2010. A sculptor and graphic artist, his work is in such collections as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Brooklyn Museum, and he designed several pieces for the college, including the Smith Medal.
