Athletics at Smith
Smith is known for its rigorous academics, but our athletics programs are just as impressive! With 11 varsity teams and a host of clubs, Smith Athletics is dedicated to showing folks what our competitive students are capable of outside the classroom. As with most things at Smith, sports are a community affair—games are packed with supportive fans, teams help girls in the region develop a love of athletics, and alums welcome athletes with open arms.

A Tradition of Support
It’s no secret that Smithies support Smithies. With an incredibly strong and active alum network, Smith Athletics can receive a warm welcome anywhere they go.

We Are the Champions
In 2023–24, three Smith teams—rowing, volleyball, and basketball—were crowned NEWMAC champions.

Join the Club
Smith offers a number of club sports open to students of all abilities and fitness levels. From fencing to synchronized swimming, there’s something for everyone.
Community Outreach
The Smith Basketball Playmakers Club was created by Division III National Coach of the Year and all-time winningest coach at Smith, Lynn Hersey, with the vision of utilizing her program’s platform as a vehicle to give back to the community. The club provides an accessible (and free!), empowering experience to local girls in grades K–8 in the community surrounding Smith.
Through this club, Hersey and her team teach skills that are typically glossed over for young girls, such as taking risks, engaging in competition, having the confidence to own the things that they do well, and celebrating each other’s successes. Upon registration to the club, every girl receives a handwritten note from a current Smith basketball player, a Smith Basketball Playmakers T-shirt, and exclusive access to free leadership-development clinics facilitated by the Smith basketball program. In its first year, the Playmakers Club provided incredible opportunities to 121 girls from the local community.
