The Professors Who Led Unforgettable Courses on Language
Little Love Stories
Before becoming a teacher herself, Roberta Klein ’74 got her best training at Smith
Published April 21, 2025
I have had a fulfilling career teaching English and creative writing to college and high school students. After Smith, I earned a master’s degree and doctorate in English, but I received my best and most memorable English training at Smith.
I still have my Norton anthologies from English 207, that brilliant survey course that served as a gateway to the delectable upper-level English offerings that lay beyond: [Geoffrey] Chaucer with Mr. Vernon Harward, the Augustan Age with Mr. Frank Hale Ellis, the English novel with Mr. Paul Pickrel, and the history of the English language with Ms. Mary Carruthers.
While I am acknowledging outstanding professors and classes, I must also thank Alice Clemente for her excellent survey course in Spanish literature and Hans Rudolf Vaget for his piquant German in translation course. Each of these courses made a huge difference to me and to the thousands of students whom I have taught.
