For my senior year I attended Harvard, where I was stunned at the ridiculously easy A’s and, at the same time, shocked at the harshly competitive attitude of fellow students. Harvard had great lecturers (Douglas Bush comes to mind) but not the caliber of brilliant teachers Smith had. I advised my kids and grandkids to think twice before applying to Harvard, and they wound up at Brown, Stanford, Bowdoin, the University of Chicago, and William & Mary, with my youngest grandchild now a first-year at Smith.

Was it hard to get an A at Smith? Yep. Did I learn kindness and sharing and community support and scholarship? Oh yes—and a wealth of in-depth subject matter expertise, too.
